Memorial Day is the day we pause as a nation to salute the men and women who have served to protect our country. At our house, Memorial Day Weekend also marks the official kick-off to summer. We fill the window boxes with red and white geraniums which complement the colors of our flag which we add for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

Preparations also include bringing the porch furniture out of winter storage and adding seat cushions and pillows - lots of pillows! We spend a lot of time on our porch, so comfort is important.

Once the porch is ready, or “open for the season” as we like to say, summertime entertaining is casual and easy. Whether it's guests invited for an evening or neighbors dropping by, it’s easy to pull together snacks or appetizers and cold beverages that everyone can enjoy.

My go-to appetizers are veggies and dip along with tortilla chips and salsa. They’re easy to serve and everyone seems to enjoy them.

Along with the chips and salsa, I’ll often make a fresh bowl of guacamole. Here’s the recipe I make, which is always a hit with family and friends.

GUACAMOLE

3 large or 4 medium avocadoes diced

1 container of pre-made salsa, well drained

8 stems of cilantro, finely chopped

Juice of 2 limes

Garlic salt and pepper to taste

Garnish with Cilantro leaves
