Everything Old Is New! Happy Fashion Day!

I’m always shopping. I like to call it “research”. But the truth is, I do it because I never know what treasure I’m going to find. Even when I’m browsing, I keep my eyes open for things I might like. Which is how I stumbled upon a sweater that looked familiar to me.

Crochet on the department store rack circa 2014

I was in a well-known department store when I saw a sweater hanging on a rack. There was something about the sweater that I liked but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. It was crochet with a retro look. I wasn’t sure I liked the sweater enough to buy it, so I took a picture of it and thought I would come back later once I decided.

Fast forward -- I keep a kind of digital “look book” with pictures of outfits that I like; would like to buy; or would like to recreate for my own wardrobe. I had forgotten about that crochet sweater until I uncovered a picture of myself from 1972. There it was -- the same crochet pattern that I had seen in the high-end department store in 2014!

Me as a pre-teen in 1972 in my crochet vest. Note the vinyl albums in the background, and (gasp) the Larks (not mine of course) on the coffee table.

Part of the fun of fashion is seeing how styles are reinvented and reinterpreted over the years. The wrap dress gets and update, the skinny pant finds a new fabric, polka dots get bigger, then smaller. Everything old is new!

I’ll see you Saturday for the Summer Fashion Day edition of AM Style!
