SuperNova DLX 8"" Touchscreen Color WiFi Tablet by Pandigital

Following are some key questions about the Pandigital SuperNova DLX.

Q: Does it work with the Android market for downloading various apps? Does the market automatically upgrade to the latest OS? What type of video chatting is supported on this tablet?

A:  Android Market is a resource for finding applications or “Apps” to run on Android. Though the DLX does not currently have access to Android Market, we have included a link to GetJar, which has thousands of apps from which you can choose those which most match your lifestyle and interests.  Currently, GetJar’s apps are all free of charge.

You can also do an internet search for any apps you wish to find. It is best to search for the name and then include “APK download” in order to reduce the hits you might receive. Again, “APK” is the file type you want to download and then install as an Android application.

As for Market and upgrading the OS, this is not something that happens on devices whether or not they have Android Market access. An OS upgrade often means a complete re-write of the device’s drivers and instructions-set (firmware) in order to make certain everything works properly. This has to happen at the individual company level and separately for each model. Such upgrades, and Pandigital has provided these in the past, will come as a device update.

Video chatting can either take the form of a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) video telephone call such as Skype or many more informal friend chat infrastructures. As most utilize all of the same web components (flash, etc), you’ll find many supported on the Pandigital SuperNova DLX. [NOTE – For best sound quality, it is recommended that you use headphones when using VOIP or other voice chat applications. ]

Specific to Skype, currently we are aware that the Skype version being provided by GetJar (2-1.5.0.109) works well for inbound and outbound voice calls.  Also, video calls in (you can see the person you are talking to) are also supported. However, this version does not support outbound video (you can see the person you are talking to but they cannot see you). We’ll continue to work with Skype and GetJar to secure all features to the latest version. A version which we’ve tested that does fully support all of the above features including video calls (both ways) is Skype version 2.1.0.46 (Skype_2.1.0.46.apk).  You can either do an internet search for “Skype_2.1.0.46.apk download” to find this file or go to http://www.mediafire.com/?1igi41v8hjbhq35 .

Q: Is there a manufacturer’s warranty and how long is it for?

A: Yes. The Limited Manufacturer’s Warranty is one year, parts and labor.

Q: Will the tablet sync with iTunes?

A: No, though iTunes is supported in both the Apple and Windows environments, it is not currently in Android.

Q: What is the difference between the DLX and original SuperNova?

A: In terms of storage, the DLX includes a 4GB microSD memory card, bringing total included storage a total of 8GB shared versus the 4GB shared of the SuperNova. Further, the Pandigital SuperNova DLX content is different, instead of Barnes & Noble as the preloaded eReading content partner we’ve loaded the Amazon Kindle App along with Zinio’s App delivering the world’s magazines to you.  Also, the Amazon MP3 music store app is included as well as a few others.

Finally, this DLX bundle from QVC includes a number of other offerings:

  • A coupon to redeem for your own, personalized SkinIt vinyl adhesive skin.

  • 16 free digital magazines from Zinio.

  • And upon registering with Zinio, an additional $25 coupon to use for additional Zinio content.

Q: What is the difference between the TSV and the Pandigital edition?

A: The Pandigital Edition is another great tablet from Pandigital which features the Amazon Kindle app and Zinio Newstand app for reading. Although the Edition is similar in all of its capabilities and functions, there are some differences:

  • The SuperNova DLX is an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen tablet where the Edition is a 7” ActiveTouch touchscreen tablet.

  • The rear-facing camera on the Edition is 1.3MP, while the DLX’s 3.0MP.

  • Bluetooth connectivity is included on the SuperNova DLX.

Finally, this exclusive QVC bundle, including (SkinIt and  Zinio Offers, plus a 4GB MicroSd memory card) make the Pandigital SuperNova DLX  a tremendous value and a tremendous gift.

Q: Does this tablet support the Android Market? Also, it apparently comes with the Kindle app. Can the Barnes & Noble or Kobo apps be installed?

A: Android Market is a resource for finding applications or “Apps” to run on Android. Though the DLX does not currently have access to Android Market, we have included a link to GetJar which has thousands of apps from which you can choose those which most match your lifestyle and interests.  Currently, GetJar’s apps are all free of charge.

The Pandigital SuperNova DLX allows you to bring the applications that are of interest to you easily to the tablet. Yes, these can include the Kobo or Barnes & Noble apps.

Q: Are you able to access Netflix?

A: Although there are APK files (the file extension of Android Applications) for Netflix which do work on the tablet and provide access to your personal account, Pandigital is still in the process of working with Netflix in order to secure an officially sanctioned application.

Q: What internal storage does it have in addition to the 4GB micro SD card which is included? In other words, does it have a total of 4GB or 8GB when we get it home?

A: The Pandigital SuperNova DLX bundle includes 8GB shared total storage; including 4GB of shared internal storage (2.94 user available) and a 4GB microSD memory card.

Q: Can the OS be updated? Can you work on word documents?

A: Gingerbread 2.3 is a stable, widely compatible, and fully featured version of Android and one we felt would provide you with the best experience at this time. As for an officially sanctioned Pandigital upgrade to the OS, it is possible that we may release one in the future; this is currently being explored. There are “hacks” for the more techy of users which have been documented online.  However, these most likely will remove many of the features you currently enjoy on the SuperNova DLX.

With the pre-installed apps, you can open Microsoft Office Word DOC files using the OfficeSuite application. To create and/or edit in this Microsoft format, there is an upgraded OfficeSuite application available. In addition, you will find endless applications you can add to your Pandigital SuperNova DLX through the included GetJar or other app stores. Among these are many which allow you to both create and read various documents.

Q: Can you get on the Internet and video conference? Does it have an app for a calendar? Do you need the Internet for it to run?

A: To start, the Pandigital SuperNova DLX does connect through any available Wi-Fi connection (with your router at home or in a public hotspot such as restaurants or libraries) to the internet in order to bring you many things: web browsing, email, video conferencing or internet telephony, and downloading applications such as games, reference tools, etc. However it does not need to be connected to the Internet at all times. Once you’ve downloaded your favorite books, magazines, or newspapers, you can read them at your leisure with no active connection. Most of the applications pre-installed or those that you download do not require a connection to use. Finally, yes, it does have a calendar app, as well.

Q: Will it read to you? Will it work with audio books?

A: As delivered, the DLX will not read to you on its own. This ability can be found, however, in some Android applications you might add.

As for audio books, you can listen to any that you may already own in any of the compatible audio file types (MP3, WAV, AAC). Again, there are also apps available that will allow you to download the audio books directly to your Pandigital SuperNova DLX. Audible.com is among them.

Q: How do I get Internet? Do I have to hook it to my home computer DSL line?

A: If you already have any other Wi-Fi devices (other computers, Playstation, etc), then you simply connect this tablet in the same way. Given that you already have a DSL line, adding Wi-Fi is simply a matter of connecting a wireless router (the transmitter) to this internet connection. The router acts as a wireless way to distribute access to your connection so that it can be easily shared among many devices and users.

Q: If I have a Wi-Fi wireless router from Verizon, will the tablet feed off it for an Internet connection? Or do I have to subscribe to a service with a monthly fee?

A: The Pandigital SuperNova DLX supports all of the standards (a/b/g/n) for Wi-Fi and should work with your existing wireless router. If you already have an active internet connection to your router, no further fees should be required to add another device to this existing connection.

Q: How do you go about downloading movies?

A: Once you find a source on the web to secure the movies you want, you simply save them in a supported file type (MP4/MPEG4 or FLV). This can be done either on your Pandigital SuperNova DLX directly or on your computer and then move the file later. In addition, many sites do allow you to stream (watch the film as it is coming across the internet live) the movies as long as you are connected to the Internet.

Q: Can it show things like Google maps?

A: Yes, most anything you can view or do on your computer’s web browser can be done on the Pandigital SuperNova DLX. As you become familiar with the tablet, you’ll note in settings where you can allow the Wi-Fi connection to assist in identifying your location. Whether through this technology, or by your entering in manually, you can then use and view the map programs and be routed as you wish.

Q: How will this do in full sunlight, like to read on the beach?

A: You could, though you will have to turn the brightness all of the way up. And as with any LCD-based display, you will also note some reflection and some washing-out of the image. You’ll be best to find a shadier place to enjoy your Pandigital SuperNova DLX.

Q: Does this tablet come with any free magazine or book subscriptions? If so how many, and do we pick or are they picked for us?

A: First of all, the TSV includes a pre-selected set of 16 magazines (1 issue each) from Zinio who, once you complete your registration with them, will also provide you with a $25 credit to use as you wish on their worldwide magazine assortment.

As for books, you can find thousands of free books via the Kindle App.

Q: What version of Android is it running, and is it upgradeable to ice cream sandwich?

A: The Pandigital SuperNova DLX runs Android 2.3. Gingerbread 2.3 is a stable, widely compatible, and fully featured version of Android and one we felt would provide you with the best experience at this time.  As for an officially sanctioned Pandigital upgrade to the OS, it is possible that we may release one in the future, this is currently being explored.

There are “hacks” for the more techy of users which have been documented online.  However, these most likely will remove many of the features you currently enjoy on the SuperNova DLX.

Q: I currently have are Sony e-reader and the books are all in Adobe E-Pub format. Will these books work with this tablet? I don't want to have to buy all my books again from Kindle.

A: Yes, you can download a reader for free from the pre-installed GetJar app store which will allow you to read your E-Pub titles.

Q: My question is: can I get a different SD card to have more data on tablet?

A: Yes, you can purchase any size microSD memory card up to 32GB in capacity and it will work with your Pandigital SuperNova DLX. And you are not limited to one card. As needed, you can swap out and use cards to store varied interests.

Q: Does the SuperNova DLX have access to Android Market?

A. Android Market is a resource for finding applications or “Apps” to run on Android.  Though the DLX does not currently have access to Android Market, we have included  a link to GetJar which has thousands of apps from which you can choose those which most match your lifestyle and interests.  Currently, GetJar’s apps are all free of charge.

Unfortunately there will be many times when you are visiting websites on your DLX when the website will prompt you to click a link to download their Android or mobile app.  These will all most likely bring you to Android Market.  It is best to not click these links as the device is not currently Android Market certified.  However, you may be able to find many of these same apps on GetJar .  Please use this site to download and install any desired apps.

You can also do an internet search for any apps you wish to find.  It is best to search for the name and then include “APK download” in order to reduce the hits you might receive.  Again, “APK” is the file type you want to download and then install as an Android application.

Q: What’s the difference between the two built-in cameras?

A: The Pandigital SuperNova DLX’s front-facing camera (Same side as screen -captures user holding tablet) and microphone are positioned  and optimized with the primary use envisioned as personal video conferencing , novelty applications/games, and personal voice note recording.

The Pandigital SuperNova DLX’s rear-facing camera (opposite side as screen -captures images on other side of tablet) is positioned and optimized with the primary use envisioned as a convenient camera for capturing still images as well as  video images.   There is no microphone paired with this camera.

Q: What is the difference between Video Conferencing and Recording Videos?

A. The camera included (VGA) is optimized to capture and convey an acceptable image of a person who is relatively still and close to the screen.  Similarly the microphone is also optimized in this way.    The greater distances, capturing of movement, and audio capture at a distance are not within this device’s abilities or intended uses.

Q: Why would I prefer to use the rear-facing camera?

A. The rear-facing camera captures images at a higher resolution for clearer images.  Also, it is optimized to capture subjects a bit further away from the tablet while providing a very easy interface - allowing you to view the tablet’s screen as your viewfinder and use the touchscreen controls to snap photos or start and stop video capture.

Q:  I want to make Skype calls using my Pandigital SuperNova DLX.  Is this possible and are there any limitations?

A:   The front camera and the front-facing microphone built into the Pandigital SuperNova DLX are configured for making calls and video calls while viewing the tablet’s screen.  Skype is certainly one of the most popular call/video-calling apps available today.  As with many Android apps, finding the correct version which incorporates the proper support for your devices hardware components and software version can take some trial and error.

Skype allows you to make and receive voice calls, have video calls, instant message, and other services using your internet connection.  Currently you can make voice or video calls and instant message from Skype on your SuperNova DLX to other internet connected devices with Skype loaded for free (these include other tablets, computers or even TVs).  Calls to landline phones and mobile phones and other advanced features may require a Skype plan –please see skype.com.

Currently we are aware that the Skype version being provided by GetJar (2-1.5.0.109) works well for inbound and outbound voice calls.

In order to make or receive video calls, you must first enable this feature within Skype’s settings. You may need to manually enable Skype video calling before you can make a video call to your Skype contacts. To do this:

  1. Sign in to Skype.

  2. From the Skype main screen (where you see contacts, recent, call phones, profile), tap the SuperNova DLX’s menu button (second button from left of the four physical buttons below the screen).

  3. Select Settings.

  1. Scroll the screen down and select Enable video calling.
