A backlit keyboard is the same as a standard keyboard except the keys are illuminated from within the keyboard, the feature is useful if the end user uses it at night or in rooms or areas where the light is low or the lights are not on…like in a bedroom, dorm room, airplane in the evening and so on…maybe in a class where the lights are off for instruction, i.e., a PowerPoint or video kind of situation.

The specs on the 15" and 17" are a bit different from each other. It's reported that the 17" has a display of 900p and the 15" has 720P. Is this a noticible difference? It is also reported that the 17" has a 3w subwoofer and the 15" does not. Will this make a noticible difference in the sound?

I really like the 15" size; but not sure if it is the better choice; as the the 17" seems to have a few more upgrades.

Please advise as to which one is the better choice....thanks!

Both of the systems have Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit operating system and they both have Microsoft Office Starter 2010. Office starter includes reduced functionality of Word & Excel with advertisments, but it does not give the full features in premium suite versions.

Hello, thank you for a great question. The media specs are indeed a little different. The 17.3 inch screen does have a little higher HD resolution, which matches the fact that the larger screen which appeals to someone who loves to watch movies. In additon, someone eho wants the bigger size laptop as a desktop replacement. Thus, in regard to the HD resolution differnece, there really isn't a difference ciewing since they are they are both HD. The Higher resolution on a bigger screen is nice since the bigger the screen the more benifit you get from a better resoluion. You can't tell the difference between the two though. In regard to the sound technology difference, the SRS Premium Virtual Surround sound is built within both systems, however, with the larger body and the fact that a lot of users watch movies often, it takes the media experience to the next level. Now, which is a better choice. Well, it depends on your needs and uses and those of anyone else who is using the computer. For example, if you do not travel alot or plan on taking the 17r with you when you are out and about, then the larger screen is definately a bonus. I enjoy the 15r since it is a little smaller, but with the widescreen build it appears much larger than the 15.6 inch size. Plus, it is about a pound lighter so it is great for individuals, students, or families who travel a lot, likes to go to the coffee shop, library, or even in the car to keep kids or the whole family connected to all friends and family or even keep the kids entertained with a movie as you head to the grandparents for the holidays.

Great question. I myself take advantage of the excellent Laplink PC Mover software often since I have so many Dell systems in my home and constantly upgrade to enjoy the many exciting new lsptops and desktops we release every year.

Laplink PC Mover is excellent to transfer all your data, files, applications, and favorites from an old computer to your new Dell computer.

The trick, of course, is knowing how to do it safely. Laplink PC Mover helps you prepare and start the process. You always want to prevent moving viruses, and spyware into the new destination, so you do need to use a good internet security (virus removal features) program such as Trend Micro PC-Illin. You can have a professional tech expert that can help you get this done as well. Do this before you create a backup of all your data before you begin the transfer (This gives the peace of mind that your data is stored in the event of any system failure with you old computer). This is key. Make sure you get all the viruses or any spyware, malware, such as key loggers (looking to gather passwords and other private login data).

Good luck! Happy Holidays!

Great question. These two excellent Dell Inspiron Switch series laptops do not come with a Blu-Ray player.

They both come with a built-in optical disc drive which can play CDs, play DVDs, burn data and media to blank CDs or DVDs, but cannot play Blu-Rays or burn them to a blank disc.

Thank you for question. This can be confusing for sure!

Microsoft Office Starter 2010 gives home users who are buying preloaded PCs the ability to perform the most common and basic productivity tasks right out of the box. Office Starter consists of Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 only, reduced functionality versions of Microsoft Word and Excel with advertising. Office Starter is available only as preloaded software on new Dell PCs with the option of upgrading to the full Office suites at any time down the road.

Best wishes, thank you for supporting Dell, and Happy Holidays!

Hi. I'm hoping you can help me make my decision. :-) I have been considering the purchase of another Dell that's offered here on QVC. It's specs are

  • XPS 15-2nd generation notebook, nine-cell lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, manual, setup diagram
  • 2.0GHz Intel Core i7-2630QM processor, up to 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost

So...is there a real difference in speed when it comes to the i7 and the i5 that is in the Today's Special Value, such that it would be worth me paying an extra $300 for it? I think XPS a step up from Inspiron line, right? I really need this to act as a desktop replacement for work that I do daily, so any feedback you can give me will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Good afternoon!

I was checking out the 17.3" model online and am wondering what the actual Dell model number is? I'd like to do some savvy comparison shopping before making my final decision. I looked for the model number but if it's there, it's escaping me.

Thanks!

Thanks. It looks as though Outlook is not part of the starter program either, so is there a mail program included? Also, what might be the difference between the Windows 7 Home edition offered here and a more professional Windows 7 program. If updates are desired, for both Word Starter 2010 and Windows 7 Home, are those available through QVC, Dell, or do we have to go through Microsoft/ Thanks.

I bought the 17" Dell today. I'm replacing my Gateway that has Windows XP. I do have the full version of Office. Can I just transfer that full version to the new laptop without transferring all of my other files? Could any viruses or malware be hidden in software? I'm not sure how good my McAfee is working. Would the Trend software catch anything being transferred?

Greetings! I have read negative reviews on the Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 card. Is there going to be a problems using a secure wireless connection without the lag?

Hello and thank you for your question. The information out there in regard to this particular topic relates to a few users that are possibly using a router that is not able to interact as well with this Intel card. Thus, the type of N Router you use may have a chance of not being as fast as the card is designed to be. That being said, Intel does not have a list of the few routers from companies that are not matching speeds as well. All in all, my experience and use of my sytems at home with this card on my secure network has been great. I have no lag and I have several computers logged in at one time.

Thanks again. Happy Holidays!
