Music filled my home growing up, because my father was always playing the piano. He played pieces we loved...I always begged him to play “The Entertainer,” by Scott Joplin, and he spent time composing. He wrote music for my mom’s plays, for musicals, for my siblings, and me or as accompaniments to his favorite poems. My dad has been composing for more than 50 years, so when he said he wanted a concert for his 80th birthday, we said absolutely! And this was to be a family affair--the three stars of the show were my dad –the composer and birthday man, my sister - the mezz... Continue Reading

Last week I went to New York to visit with some of our vendor partners. I always love going to New York, and this time, once I hit the city I headed straight for my hotel, dropped my bags, and went to Magnolia Bakery to get my favorite German Chocolate cake (three pieces, I cannot tell a lie!!!).
It was a beautiful and mild Wednesday afternoon, so I went to Bryant Park and sat and ate cake! It was the perfect start to an amazing visit. I started bright and early at the Empire State Building. Who goes to the Empire State Building to work? Our friends at Philosophy. I met Mari Lyn Meier, we s... Continue Reading

I love the library. Yup, I said it. In 2015 I still go to the library every single week.
Me: I’m going to the library.
Alberti: The library? What do you do there?
I know I can buy eBooks or audio books anywhere, but I still prefer the library.
1) I’m surrounded by people who like to do what I do, read;
2) I love the physical presence of books;
3) I love the feeling of the library community (yay librarians!!!);
4) I love that the resources at the library are free! And I want to support the library system.
I’ve had a love affair with boo... Continue Reading

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.”
Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr.
My mom was there. She was one of the 250,000 people listening to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that August day. When I ask her about it, she lights up, “It was a thrilling experience which stands out in my mind as one of the great moments of my life.”
My mom was 27 years old in 1963. She, her husband, and my 8-month-old brother had joined others wit... Continue Reading

Whether you're an easy-going walker or a speed racer, Today's Special Value Vionics are going to be your new go-to shoe for hitting the pavement. I wanted to share with you guys the joy that having a walking buddy has given me! Here's a little bit from Kerstin's perspective, then from me.
“Rachel and I didn’t know each other that well when she emailed me and said she saw I was walking the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer 3 day walk and wanted to help me train. I was so happy! I had no one to walk with and I was still a new host far from home and all my people. We bragged our wa... Continue Reading

I’m adopted. People always ask, “when did I know?” but I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know. My family is white and I am black, so it was pretty obvious My parents adopted me when I was about 2 months old. Not because my mom couldn’t have children, I’m a middle child, but because she wanted to (and could). I always tease her and say “what happened mom? Did you wake up one day and say “I want a baby,” and go and pick me up?” My mom just laughs.
Kerstin Lindquist is an adoptive parent too, and she recently posted this qu... Continue Reading

I’ve spent the majority of my working life in the 24/7 live television business (first in news, and now on QVC), which means that I’m far away from family on major holidays. This has put me in the uniquely wonderful position of being a holiday guest (read "mainstay") for some very special friends. For the past couple of years, I’ve had the privilege of spending Thanksgiving with my friend and colleague Courtney Cason, her family, and Lisa Robertson.
First of all, and you know this, she is a delight :) And she’s a terrific cook (she’s experimental, dari... Continue Reading

I adopted Bailey & Olivia in early 2011. This itty-bitty brother and sister team, two total puffballs, delighted me in every way. Initially Bailey was the timid one and Olivia was the adventurous one.
As they grew in to adolescence, all gangly and lean, their personalities started to emerge. Bailey prefers to be “up high.” He’s always climbing on top of bookshelves. Olivia likes to be “down low.” She likes to slip in to cupboards or under hanging blankets.
Like any siblings sometimes they’re totally in love, and sometimes they’re ... Continue Reading

With the calendar start of fall, we know it for sure; the summer of 2014 is officially a wrap. This summer was a milestone for me because I got to visit my family, outside of the Christmas holiday, for the first time in decades! Two glorious trips filled with lazy days and much frolicking.
Lazy: I spent time in the hammock, or playing Yahtzee with my two nieces.
My brother and I would sit and chat in the yard.
The weather was so beautiful that we’d have dinner outside.
I had cherished alone time with my siblings and my mom.
Frolicking: I got to be goofy with my nephews. ... Continue Reading

I spent a summer on Martha’s Vineyard between my sophomore and junior years in college, and I’ve been enchanted with the place ever since.
Michele, Doreen, and I have been friends since college. I recently joined Michele’s family vacation for four jam-packed days.
We biked along the beach and spent fun time in the water….
A nice outdoor shower kept me going after a day at the beach.
If you’re ever on the island, you must stop by this lighthouse. I go every time I visit to take in the view.
Larsen’s Fish Market in Menemsh... Continue Reading
