Greetings from St Augustine, Florida where I am spending a long New Year’s weekend with family and friends. It is 70 degrees today and not a cloud in the sky. Wish you were all here.
I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s holiday and were able to tune in for part of the QVoyager live from Vienna. It was quite an extravaganza with Lisa Robertson in a ball gown from the Albertina in the Hofburg Palace.
The Gem Gallery launches January 4, and highlights some of the most rare and beautiful gemstones from around the world. Our designers have been working on new ideas to start out your new year. I think that the Apatite Today's Special Value is one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry ever sold at QVC and is perfect for every rare gem lover. The vibrant tones are the hottest color direction for 2009 and could be right out of a high end designer‘s line.
The week continues with new shows including malachite and pink sapphires. Three separate gem galleries will feature special QVoyager stones and stories including Rose Blush Garnets, Santa Maria Aquamarine, and Indigo Blue Amethyst.
Rose Blush Garnets are only found in one mine in the world and that is in Tocantins, Brazil. Tocantins is the newest state in Brazil, created in 1988. The garnet mines are found near the town of Sao Valerio da Natividade and are the open pit type of mine. Rough stones are often found as deep reddish balls. Rose Blush Garnets are a distinctive, rich purplish red to reddish purple color and are part of the Almandine garnet family. Did you know that the name garnet comes from the Latin word for pomegranate?
The rare Santa Maria Aqua is treasured for its intense blue. It is a true blue, with no hint of green. It is named after the Santa Maria mine in Brazil where it was originally discovered. Today it is mined in the Macula Mine in the province of Zambezia in Mozambique. Zambezia is bordered by the Indian Ocean on the east and the Zambezia River on the south. Aquamarine is derived from the Latin word for water of the sea and you won’t want to miss this rare, intense blue aquamarine.
Indigo Blue Amethyst is also found in only one location in the world near the city of Montezuma in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Its color ranges from a moderate blue to purplish blue and is the only blue variety of quartz known. The mines are deep tunnels snaking through the gem laden mountain.
There will be so much more during this Gem Gallery Week. Let me know what you think of the intensity and richness of the colors.
One of the most famous New Year’s celebrations in the world takes place in Vienna. On New Year’s Eve royalty and commoners alike gather at the Hofburg Palace for the Imperial Ball. The revelers are treated to a royal banquet and are graced by an appearance by the Empress and Emperor. Throughout the evening waltzes are held throughout the ball rooms and main halls. The Director of the Imperial Ball took me on a private tour of the main ballroom and it is spectacular. At the end of the Imperial Ballroom, is a giant mural of the royal waltz. Our designers have recreated this in a limited edition engraved crystal quartz, carnelian, silver Diamonique locket with multiple chains and matching ring that will transport you to the Imperial Ball.
There is a special Christmas path, the Sylvester Trail, winding through the old city of Vienna ending at St. Stephens Square. At midnight, on New Year’s Eve, the Pommerin Bell rings, the Blue Danube is played, and everyone in the square waltzes. Our designers went wild with the merriment and beauty of the celebrations and location and created magical designs using the swag from the entrance to St Stephens as the inspiration for details on certain shanks and an inspiring collection of ring, pendant, and earrings with crosses. The 23 bells are represented on a wonderful chandelier earring and the Glory of St Stephens, the spectacular glazed tile roof reminding us of Viennese lace, can be found gracing the lattice designs of an intricate bangle, ring, and earrings.
Finally on New Year’s Day the festivities come to a grand end at the Konzerthaus, where the Vienna Philharmonic performs the famous New Year’s Day Concert broadcast worldwide to over one billion people. Over 30,000 carnations decorate the Golden Hall where the Blue Danube and many other wonderful songs by Johan Strauss II are played. Our designers have created a special collection of pave Diamonique jewelry celebrating the beauty and importance of the carnation. The Blue Danube, the most famous waltz and the river that flows through Austria is highlighted in a limited edition sapphire cushion cut ring with tapered baguettes and other spectacular pieces.
QVoyager, Vienna will be live from the Albertina, which is located in the southern corner of the Hofburg Palace. Today it houses one of the world’s finest art collections and contains 21 Hapsburg staterooms. The Hall of Muses is considered one of the most beautiful rooms in the Palace.
The scalloped details over the main entrance of the Albertina and the glorious transoms in the Hall of Muses inspired the two toned pave band ring, hoop earrings, and incredible bangle bracelet for the collection.
Wow, and there is so much more. Please tune in for the trip to the magical city of Vienna and the fabulous jewelry collection that it inspired. What could be better than the beautiful Lisa Robertson in a ball gown in a palace with gorgeous jewelry.
On many summer mornings, Empress Elizabeth could be found having breakfast in the Gloriette on top of Schonbrunn hill overlooking the Great Parterre (or great lawn) and the Palace. Built in 1775, it allows a spectacular view of Schonbrunn Palace and its many imperial buildings. The central section of the Gloriette formed by three triumphant arches and the intricate swag over each arch inspired several exclusive Diamonique QVoyager Vienna designs. Standing at the bottom of the Gloriette, gazing at Schonbrunn, I could imagine the Emperor and Empress walking hand in hand through the beautiful gardens.
Schonbrunn Palace, the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth, is a baroque masterpiece with many magnificent architectural features and details. The swirls flanking each of the six glorious columns over the main entrance are evident in an oval two toned pave ring, and the imperial urns lining the palace’s roof like toy soldiers are golden details in others.
For more than seven centuries, the great empire of the Hapsburgs was ruled from the grand Hofburg Palace. The Palace includes many famous rooms and events, including the Royal Chapel, where the Vienna Boy’s Choir sings every Sunday, the Spanish Riding School with its famous Lipizzaner Horses, and the famous SiSi Museum.
The magnificent entrance of the Hofburg Palace with its U shaped portals, the intricate garland swag over the main doorway, and the famous round windows inspired many beautiful pieces in the collection. The entrance to Empress Elizabeth’s private apartments is through St Michael’s Gate. The lace design surrounding the dome of St Michaels and the tulip piping cascading from the tip of the dome are recreated on the royal crown eternity band, a two tone pave and baguette ring, a fabulous chandelier earring, and an elegant pave crest pendant with chain. SiSi’s love of flowers is once more evident in the royal flower medallion pendant patterned after the carved flower that graces the ceiling beneath the dome.
The impressive garland swags, twisted ropes outlining architectural details, and inlaid floral medallions located throughout the Great Hall and Main Ball Room of the Palace are featured in the collection and will be discussed by Lisa Robertson and our Austrian friend Birgit Reider during the show.
On New Year’s Eve, royalty and commoners alike enter the Hofburg Palace for the Imperial Ball. Don’t miss my next blog where we travel, with a very special guide, into the Imperial Ball Room.
Don’t miss a moment!
Thank you Pat for sending me the link to the Judith Ripka creative writing dialogue. What a wonderful story and so true. Early next year, I will start addressing your comments and concerns once again. Right now I want to continue on our journey to magical Vienna.
QVoyager, live from Vienna, on New Year’s Eve and Day will feature exclusive jewelry inspired by architecture, music, nature, and the Austrian Royal Family. Our designers have created a magnificent selection of Diamonique Jewelry that will denote the beauty, history and celebration that has been a part of the culture of Vienna throughout the years.
She was considered the most beautiful woman in the world. Empress Elizabeth, affectionately known as SiSi by her subjects, lived a fabled life spending her time while in Vienna between her summer residence, the story book Schonbrunn Palace and her winter residence, Hofburg Palace.
Two weeks ago we had a private visit to Empress Elizabeth’s personal apartments in the Hofburg Palace. Walking through her bedroom and sitting room, her great passion for red was evident everywhere. Upon reaching the museum room and gazing upon the magnificent court painting of Empress Elizabeth wearing her fabulous ruby crown and necklace it was obvious that rubies were her favorite stone. Our designers took this love of red and created magnificent designs for your pleasure. Please look for the royal rose ring and pendant that not only feature SiSi’s love of rubies but also roses which were entwined on her wedding invitation and on many court gowns. There is also a ruby necklace with a 36 inch chain that can be worn long or doubled for a more imperial look.
Empress Elizabeth was also well known for her love of lace. Her wedding dress as well and the many court dresses are fraught with frothy layers of intricate lace. Our designers created other exclusive designs with this delicate detail.
SiSi is best known for the 27 pave diamond stars that she had woven into her hair. Originally produced by the imperial court jewelers, our designers have created two magical rings and a breathtaking pendant that will make you feel that you too own part of the imperial jewels.
Empress Elizabeth’s passion for flowers is evident throughout her apartments. Her favorite Alpine flower and perhaps the best know to us, is the Edelweiss. QVC, along with Swarovski, has created an exclusive Edelweiss cut for Diamonique. Don’t miss the stud earrings, three stone ring, and other special designs created especially for you. Be sure and look for the Edelweiss details on the gallery and screens.
Tune in later in the week for more inspirations including royal palaces, waltzes, and world famous celebrations.
Some may say Paris, others San Francisco; some may even say New York. I just returned from a magical place that is not only one of the most beautiful cities in the world but also totally immersed in the holiday spirit whether it is through the thousands of lights cascading through the trees sparkling like jewels, or the Christmas villages scattered about serving punch, playing festive music, and selling local holiday crafts, or the magnificent decorations turning palaces into royal extravaganzas.
What city was founded about 500 BC as a Celtic settlement, became part of the Roman Empire in 15BC, was overrun by Mongolians in the 13th century, and finally in the 15th century became the home of one of the longest running Imperial dynasties? Some of the most spectacular palaces of Europe are located here, the most famous boy’s’ choir in the world sings here every Sunday, the most gorgeous horses seen anywhere perform here, and on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day one of the most famous celebrations in the world is held. The New Year’s Eve Imperial Ball is heralded around the world as the most lavish event and the New Year’s Day concert is heard by over 1 billion people.
Starting at 2:00 PM on New Year’s Eve the famous Sylvester trail winds through the old city lined with Christmas Villages, make shift concert and dance halls, and other entertainment for all ages. The trail ends at St. Stephens Square, where at midnight, the famous Pommerin Bell rings, the Blue Danube is played, and everyone waltzes in the Square.
Please tune in on New Year’s Eve for a very special program live from Vienna. Over the next few days I will share with you some of the magic of Vienna and the exclusive designs for Diamonique that will transport you to the grandeur and majesty that is Imperial Vienna.
If you have been lucky enough to travel to Vienna, please write and tell me about it. For those of you that haven’t, hang on to your hats and tune in for this magical, live broadcast.
Why buy jewelry during the holidays? While the stock market has more ups and downs than the roller coaster (The Griffon) at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and we are told to tighten our belts tighter than the contestants on the Biggest Loser, why indeed, should we buy jewelry? It’s not as if we have to adorn ourselves to keep warm during the winter or that we can run our cars on gold.
It really is about the importance of jewelry in our lives. What better way to say I love you than with that special ring or pendant. During tough times it is so important that we reach out to those we love with something that comes from the heart. Traditionally, beauty products do well during troubled financial times because they make us feel and look good. . Jewelry also makes us feel proud and fulfilled. But jewelry is really much more. Every time you hesitate to buy a piece of jewelry, you should stop and think is it something that I will be proud to hand down to my daughter, sister, granddaughter, or other special loved one. Enjoy your jewelry and remember it could be a family heirloom to the next generation.
My family always has one request-Jewelry! My Mother, two sisters, three nieces, and four great nieces have come to expect jewelry for Christmas. OK, my one year old great niece, and the one to be born in March aren’t quite ready yet, but they will learn very quickly. This year my Mother, Sisters, and two of my nieces will receive pieces from Judith Ripka’s collection. I can’t tell you which pieces, because they read my blogs, but will let you know some of my favorites.
One of my favorite rings is J24946, especially in mint or champagne quartz. Another is J38321 because it looks just like pink and white diamonds. I love button earrings and J29833 look very expensive and are extremely flattering. Don’t forget that in 2009, it is supposed to be the year of the necklace. Judith’s cultured freshwater and silver chain, J39248 is stunning.
I do have family members and friends that don’t want jewelry or at least aren’t getting any from me. My Stepfather Charlie, who is 96, always wants the lemon, coconut cheesecake, and my closest friends are all getting Junior’s chocolate mousse cheese cake.
Food and jewelry, what could be better!
Happy holidays,
Peyton
PS: This is a picture of my Mother, Sisters, and Brother last Christmas enjoying the holiday spirit.
So much has been going on since we last spoke. I hope everyone enjoyed Diamonique Week. Scott and his team out did themselves creating new, hot (one of the young buyers at QVC told me I was out of date and should say fierce instead of hot) items. Did you all have a chance to tune in for the premier of the QVoyager? The footage from Brazil and the spectacular Tourmaline product was not to be missed. Please let me know what you think of the four blogs I wrote on Brazil. A special ola to RGC who is originally from Sao Paulo. I have to tell you how much I love your beautiful, passionate home country. The richness and diversity of gemstones from Minas Gerais is breathtaking. Stay tuned for more spectacular locations later in the year. We are actually going to be live from one the most famous locations in the world.
I am out of the office for a couple of weeks but wanted to talk about the exciting programs that taking place. Many of our favorite designers are having special holiday shows. Barbara Bixby celebrated her fifth anniversary. A wonderful new show, Gold Expressions-Italian Passion by Design premiered November 7. Who can’t use a little more passion right now?
The fabulous Judith Ripka was here this past weekend. I did have a chance to read through many of the comments from the Ladies of the JR Forum and as always, enjoyed them very much. I love the idea of the JR fragrance. The Q delivery issues concern me and I will be forwarding that on to the right person for action. I will also address the magnet problems with the factory. I will have to get back to you about the turquoise issue, I don’t know the answer but will find out.
November continues with Holiday Specials with Kirks Folly on November 11 at 1 AM and Michael Dawkins at 7 PM. One of my special passions, handcrafted, will be back with Taxco Traditions on November 14 at 5 AM and the fabulous, beautiful, genuine Ann King will be back to celebrate her 7th anniversary at 6 PM. Be sure and tune in for Honora’s TSV on November 16. It is a great gift item as well as something special for yourself.
Take care and I will be back in touch soon. Don’t forget to let me know your thoughts or comments and don’t miss a moment.
I hope you are enjoying QVoyager and our whirlwind trip to Brazil. The most adventurous part of our journey begins today. We are actually traveling deep into the mountains of Minas Gerais, the richest gemstone mining area in the world, to the tourmaline mines. The unpaved road winding through the mountains was very rough and had death defying hairpin curves. More than once, while moving way too fast, I looked over the edge and saw the spectacular, but very deep valley. Whenever we would turn a curve and the sun would come out, the road would sparkle. We finally stopped and walking along the road, I realized that it wasn’t just gravel but minerals. I was amazed to see quartz and mica every where, we truly were in the center of the gemstone world.
The Morro Redondo Mine contained one of the greatest discoveries of gem quality tourmaline ever found. First discovered in 1992 the final pocket was mined out by 1997 and the mine was closed. Over 400 miners were working in the mine at one time and named the final pocket, Elbe, after the Isle of Elba, where tourmaline was first discovered. In 1996 one of our suppliers purchased a large amount of pink tourmaline rough from the mine and locked it away in his vault. Twelve years later QVC has joined forces with him to bring the rough out of vault and into jewelry for you. The Morro Redondo Mine was known for tourmaline crystals which are extraordinarily clean and rich of color. We are proud to have the exclusive chance to share these gemstones with you. There is nowhere else today that these vibrant pink tourmalines can be found except in private collections or the single piece of jewelry.
Today we actually get to tunnel into the mines where our green tourmaline and Rubellite are found. Once we reached the top of the mountain, the mine owners greeted us and prepared a spectacular barbecue. Sitting on top of the mountain, eating way too much, I could see pegmatite dikes throughout the hills and realized what made this area so special. Pegmatite dikes are a group of minerals that were formed millions of years ago and tourmaline crystals are mixed in with a combination of feldspar, quartz, and mica. I checked the quality of the rough tourmalines with the mine owners and was thrilled with what I saw. Please note the pictures of the actual rough. Tourmaline is the only gemstone to form in a three sided crystal prisms. The rough lends itself to longer, narrower gemstones.
We are finally ready to go into the tunnels. After donning special boots, we traveled deep into the mountain through tunnels, at the most, five feet in height. Water is used to loosen the gems and there is several inches of water throughout the mine. We reached a large area that had been dug into the side of the tunnel. This was a pegmatite dike that had been discovered and just mined out. There was plentiful feldspar, mica, and quartz but the tourmaline had already been removed. Deeper into the mountain we went, until we reached the end where the miners were working. They were so proud to walk us through the different mining steps and hopeful that the pegmatite they were working on would be as rich as the last.
What an experience to see the actual mines where these beautiful gemstones are found. Please tune in to Gem Fest and travel with us to Brazil. The tourmalines are gorgeous and what a treat to know the story behind each one. We will be sharing film clips taken during our trip. The TSV Extra launching at midnight contains a fabulous tourmaline from the Morro Redondo Mine. The only other piece on at midnight will be a pink tourmaline and diamond pendant. The special cut of this stone exemplifies the beauty of the long narrow tourmaline crystals. Also tune in at 8:00 PM on Thursday night for the four hour Gem Fest. Scattered throughout the show are 12 fabulous tourmaline products containing Morro Redondo pink tourmaline as well as green tourmalines and Rubellite from our trip.
QVoyager continues high in the mountains of Mina Gerais, the richest gemstone mining area in the world, to the beautiful, colonial town of Ouro Preto. The town’s name actually means black gold. The first gold nugget was discovered sometime between 1693 and 1698 in the creek riverbed that flows through the mountain range. The nuggets appeared to be small black pebbles but were actually pure gold covered by a thin layer of iron oxide.
Thirty years later, over 40,000 prospectors had staked claims seeking their fortunes. It is believed that over 100 tons of gold were mined in tunnels under the town of Ouro Preto. Today you can actually visit two of the largest tunnels snaking their way through the hills the town is built on. When the Portuguese levied a 20% tax on all gold found, the miners began to find ingenious ways to hide their riches. The Church of Pilar has over 484 kilos of gold in it’s alter. Other miners had large wooden religious statues carved with hollow centers and filled them with gold. Eventually this tax led to several revolts that were brutally dealt with.
Ouro Preto, a protected World Heritage sight, is located in the state of Minas Gerais and was the capital until 1897 when it was transferred to the town of Belo Horizonte. Ouro Preto reminds me a lot of Taxco; it is built on rolling hills and has beautiful cobblestone streets, white washed houses and red tile roofs. The many churches feature a unique type of architecture, called Minas Baroque. The intricate soapstone carvings decorating the imposing facade of the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi as well as many magnificent details inside the sanctuary are prime examples.
Gemstones were discovered outside Ouro Preto in the mid 1700’s. The Rodrigo Silva imperial topaz mine, first discovered during this time, is still in production today. Our film crew travelled the few miles through winding unpaved roads to the topaz mines located in a deep valley. Topaz is mined in an open pit style with machinery digging deep into the earth and then high powered hoses washing away the dirt from the gems. The Brazilians are extremely ecologically minded and every part of the earth that is mined must be reclaimed and replanted.
For each 400 tons of dirt, approximately 30 kg of topaz is found. Of this only 2% is gem quality but most is not of gem color. The Braganza, a magnificent 1680 carat colorless topaz set into the Portuguese crown came from this mine and was thought for many years to be a diamond. A wide variety of gems have been discovered throughout the state of Mina Gerais including aquamarine, chrysoberyl, diamonds, emeralds, kunzite, Morganite, and tourmaline.
Please tune in tomorrow when we continue our journey to the gemstone town of Governador Valadares and travel to the top of the mountain, crawling through pegmatite laden tunnels to reach the riches of tourmaline.
Our QVoyager journey to Brazil continues to the colorful, sensual city of Rio de Janeiro. Most of us think of Carnival, samba, and beaches but Rio is so much more. From standing in the shadow of the 30 story tall Christ the Redeemer statue on top of Corcovado Mountain to the two cable car trip up to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain to an eye opening walk down Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches, Rio is hot, colorful, and rich in history.
Discovered in 1502 at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain, the explorers got a little confused and named Rio the river of January or Rio de Janeiro because they thought they had discovered the mouth of a great river. Actually it was a magnificent group of wide beaches. Rio was originally founded as a post to invade neighboring French settlements but when gold, diamonds, and gemstones were discovered, Rio became an important shipping center. One of the most interesting historical bits about Rio is that it was actually the capital of the Portuguese Empire from 1808 to 1821 when the Portuguese Royal family moved here and set up court to avoid being captured by Napoleon.
The train ride up Corcovado Mountain is both thrilling and educational. Through breaks in the Tijuca Rain Forrest, there are glimpses of far off mountains and glittering beaches. Once at the top and after a climb of many, many steps we arrived at the foot of the 30 story tall Christ the Redeemer statue, considered one of the new wonders of the world. The statue looks out over the city of Rio with open arms blessing and welcoming. There is walkway out onto the edge of the mountain where a 360 degrees view of Rio takes your breath away. It was very warm that day and I was surprised to find that there was an escalator up and down to the train.
The two cable car ride up to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain gave us one of the most spectacular views of the beaches and was a little scary. The wind rocked the car and made everyone hang on for dear life and say silent prayers (some not so silent).
Our whirlwind tour of Rio continued with a stroll along the wide and very beautiful Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches. Ipanema was made famous by the song, The Girl from Ipanema, sung at one time by Frank Sinatra and another by Ella Fitzgerald. I don’t really know quite what to say about the beaches other than to say, I wore dark glasses the entire time and blushed constantly. Bikinis, and much less, were everywhere. Brazilians are a beautiful, lusty, passionate people and it was evident all over the beaches. Enough said!
There are so many other aspects of Rio including Carnival, the music (key song the Bossa Nova), sports (some of the finest soccer players in the world, the food (the Brazilian Churrasco or Brazilian cowboy style of steakhouses) and I only briefly mentioned the Tijuca Rainforest, the world’s largest urban rainforest. Hopefully I can go into more details later.
Please tune in tomorrow when we travel to Ouro Preto, the colonial capital of the richest mining area of Brazil and a journey to the depths of the topaz mine. Don’t miss a moment.
Ready for an incredible journey? On October 9, we are launching QVoyager, one of the most exciting, adventurous, and true mine to market stories every told. Join our journey to exotic, international sites and discover new places and faces, far-off locations and colorful celebrations as QVoyager takes you from the depths of remote gemstone mines to the historic collections of some of the world’s most celebrated museums to the studios of international designers.
Our adventure begins with a journey through Brazil. Over the next four days, please join us as we travel to one of the most beautiful, diverse, and exotic countries in the world. What a thrill to crawl through tourmaline tunnels high in the mountains or descend steep cliffs into topaz mines deep in a gem laden valley! We will not only visit the source of some of the most exotic gemstones in the world but also travel throughout Brazil to capture the flavor of the country. Our first stop is one of the natural wonders of the world, Iguacu Falls
Eleanor Roosevelt, when she saw Iguacu Falls for the first time, remarked, “Poor Niagara”. Iguacu Falls are actually four times wider and much taller than the spectacular Niagara Falls. We saw them in the recent adventure movie featuring the college professor with the signature hat and whip. The adventurers have several spectacular plunges over breathtaking falls, and at the end of the movie, when the space ship ascends, it forms a huge crater creating magnificent falls. These falls are only part of the incredible Iguacu Falls located on the border of Brazil and Argentina.
Iguacu Falls stretch out along a vast crescent shaped cliff over 2 ½ miles long and are composed of 275 different cascades. Our film crew traveled to the edge of the falls in a rubber raft to capture one of the natural wonders of the world. I have never seen rapids so swift or deep. Over 450,000 cubic feet of water per second were coming over the falls and the turbulence stirred up in the river was mind boggling.
Local legend has it that a god wanted to marry a beautiful maiden who tried to flee with her mortal lover down the river. In a rage the god sent lightening bolts to slice the river in two creating the falls. It is believed that the mortal lover is a rock at the bottom of the falls, splashed for eternity, and the maiden is a beautiful palm tree outside the cave at the top of the falls. In reality Iguacu Falls were formed by a volcanic eruption leaving a massive crack in the earth.
Tomorrow we are traveling to the exotic and hot blooded Rio de Janeiro. On Wednesday we will visit Ouro Preto, the colonial capital of the gem mining center of Brazil, and on Thursday, we actually go into the mines to discover the exotic world of tourmaline.
Did you see the front page of the Program Guide? It features two of the hottest jewelry pieces for the upcoming Creede Silver Strike Event. This is our largest selection of sterling silver jewelry before the holidays and a great time to pick up that fabulous item for you or a special gift for the holidays. On October 2, 1889, Nicholas Creede staked his claim to the Holy Moses Mine in the Upper Rio Grande Valley of Colorado, sparking the last great silver boom of the Old West. Nicholas is said to have yelled “Holy Moses” when he struck silver. On October 2,2008 QVC will feature over $28 million of all new sterling silver jewelry at special prices.
The big three theme for the day is color, beads, and bold. The big, bold diamond cut checkerboard omega bracelet is a WOW. It is very flexible and a great example of the hottest direction in jewelry today, bold bracelets. The multi colored silver nugget necklace is also gorgeous. It has all the colors that are hot, and will go with all of your jewelry-silver, gold, chocolate.
I looked through the selection for the entire day and there are so many wonderful pieces. There is a choice of black onyx, white agate, or carnelian beads with a designer, marcasite clasp. The bold door knocker earrings are a great example of colors of silver. The amethyst three row nested necklace is a show stopper and the bold fringe necklace featured inside the program guide is perfect for that special holiday party. One of my favorite pieces is the first ever tanzanite and apatite ring. For those of you, who love exotics and blue, don’t miss it.
Of course, I have to mention a couple of artisan crafted pieces. Lisa Robertson will have the boldest cuff from Thailand. It is 1 ½ inches wide and made by a technique called repousse. The colors of pearl artisan crafted ring from Beijing is a WOW. The freshwater, cultured pearl is 13MM in diameter and the pearl is offered in a choice of gold, white, chocolate, or gray. Please notice the little filigree butterfly on each side of the shank.
Please tune in and enjoy the day. Don’t miss a moment.
The last two weeks, I have been traveling in an incredible location with a QVC film crew capturing the sights and sounds of one of the most exciting, beautiful, and exotic countries in the world. This country is so important for the jewelry lover and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. Next week, I will be able to give you a sneak preview of the upcoming show with pictures and hopefully a video. I know you will be as excited as I am. There was a beautiful lady sitting in front of me on one of the flights wearing Michael Dawkins sterling signature pod earrings and pendant and she looked great.
Now that I am back in the office, I have really enjoyed reading the dialogues from the ladies of the Judith Ripka Forum. I did pass your wish lists on to Judith. The note from the husband about the cable provider really made me laugh and I love it when someone asks a question about a specific piece fitting or falling off and the other members rally around her with information. I have asked Natalie, Judith’s buyer here at QVC, to give me an idea of what is coming up in new pieces. Natalie says” she has heard you loud and clear”. She and her team are working on new styles that will feature DMQ only as an accent. Natalie continued “we are bringing you new beautiful color combinations with minimal DMQ. Judith and our team are very excited with the new styles and hope that you will love them too”. Approximately 65% of the new items on October 14 will be color with DMQ accents.
Our JR factory has sent me an update from the meetings last month addressing QA issues. There were 47 specific comments that we discussed. The factory separated them into issues concerning gemstones, chains, mechanisms, components, manufacturing, finishing, waitlists, packaging, and new product requests. They also addressed general questions, such as sacrificing quality for price, sizes of cuffs and rings, gift boxes, etc. Specific J numbers were referenced where applicable. The factory has systematically gone through each issue with their management, production team, and QA team. I am extremely pleased with their attention to all details and know you will be happy as well. They also informed me that all of the posts and wires on Judith’s jewelry are nickel free.
Thank you once again for your comments on my blog, please keep them coming. I will discuss your comments with Robert and his buyer and also with Naomi’s buyer. During the last Silver Marketplace show, I answered your question on-air about enhancers. Artisan crafted enhancers are just not strong enough to pass our QA standards. That is a great question about half sizes on advanced orders. I don’t know the answer or even who to address that one to but will find out and get back to you.
Let me know your thoughts and don’t forget to read my blog next week. There will be a little preview of an exciting new adventure.
Gem Week is here! This week we are featuring some of the most fabulous gemstones from around the world. We’re sharing the legends, myths, and symbolism surrounding all of our gems, and the special meanings behind each stone. There will be special shows featuring turquoise, aquamarine, diamonds, exotics, and many more. Two of my favorite people will have many new styles. Patricia Wang brought back her Jade Studio and Carolyn Pollack will be on September 21st with a fabulous TSV.
One of my favorite exotics is Tanzanite. Tomorrow, the TSV will be a beautiful Tanzanite and Sapphire 14k gold ring. The gorgeous vibrant blue violet oval Tanzanite’s are a beautiful contrast to the deep blue sapphires. We are able to bring you this high quality Tanzanite because of our close relationship with the Tanzanite Foundation.
Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 by Manuel D’Souza who was mining for Sapphires
